A "role model" British ski instructor has died in the French Alps, reportedly while teaching other skiers. Aaron McLean, who grew up in Edinburgh and went on to co-found UK off-piste group British Freeride, is thought to have been instructing a group of young advanced skiers in the French resort of Avoriaz when he was seriously injured.

The exact circumstances of his death have yet to be established. Snowsport Scotland said the 26-year-old had suffered a "tragic accident". In a statement, the group said: "It is with great sadness that we are informed today of the sudden death of Aaron McLean from a tragic accident in the Alps yesterday afternoon.

"Aaron, a talented back-country skier, coach, and man of great enthusiasm and infectious energy was immensely instrumental in the formation of British Freeride last year; the organisation that has created our Junior Freeride Coaching Pathway.

"Aaron was also behind the inspirational award-winning back-country skiing movie, LATE.
"Our thoughts and sympathies go out to his family and close friends and we hope his legacy will live on through the continued activity of British Freeride."

A statement from British Freeride's Rob Kingsland said: "With a heavy heart its so hard to tell everyone of the death of Aaron McLean, a friend, amazing skier, lover of the mountains and people and co-founder of British Freeride.

"Still trying to gather thoughts as I'm sure family, friends and the mountain community are. If any parents and skier or anyone else wants support or a chat we are here. Ski in peace Aaron."

Other tributes were paid to the skier with one, Emma White, saying: "A true role model touching the hearts of all the kids with enthusiasm for his sport, he will be sorely missed."
