The Gulf of Mexico state has endured years of turf wars between drug gangs, including the Jalisco New Generation Drug Cartel, the Zetas and the Gulf cartel.
It is also the most dangerous state for journalists in Mexico, with a dozen reporters killed since 2010. More than 100 000 people have been killed or gone missing in drug-related violence nationwide since 2006.
