Girl, 16, commits suicide after she was gang-raped 'as punishment' because her mum dared to stand for election in India

She was found dead a day after she was allegedly abducted and sexually assualted

THE teenage daughter of a politician hanged herself after she was kidnapped and gang-raped as punishment for her mother's election success in India.

The 16-year-old, who has not been named, was found dead a day after she was allegedly abducted and sexually assualted by relatives of the losing candidate.

The attack came after the girl's mother was elected to a local government position in the Mirzapur district of north-east India

Before her suicide, the victim and her mother told police that she had been taken from her home whilst asleep and sexually abused in a field on December 23.

Indian authorities refused to file an offical report, sending the girl and her relatives home with only verbal reassurance, the Mail Online reported. Apparently humiliated by officals and traumatised after the attack, the teenager took her life the next day.

Indian police arrested two men, Pappu Bahelia and Bindu Bahelia, after discovering the girl's body. According to the Socialist party candidate in Mirzapur district, Arvind Sen, she was gang-raped by relatives of the losing candidate to avenge the poll defeat.

Her mother won a seat on the block development council in Mirzapur, north-east India.
